OSCA 2018-2019 UPPERCLASS CO-OP LOTTERY

Registration for the OSCA 2018-2019 Upperclass Co-op Lottery is now OPEN!

INSTRUCTIONS

Please read the following information thoroughly; it explains how to become a member of OSCA for next academic year. To have a chance of getting into a co-op for next Fall, you must participate in the Upperclass Co-op Lottery.

INTRODUCTION

The Oberlin Student Cooperative Association (OSCA) includes three housing & dining co-ops, four dining-only co-ops, and one housing-only co-op. OSCA has both room/board and board-only options available. OSCA has two safe spaces available, and whose membership are selected entirely by application (see below). Students who plan to dine in Brown Bag Co-op must have village or town housing status.

To have a chance of getting into a co-op for next Fall, you must participate in the Upperclass Co-op Lottery. All members of OSCA are placed by lottery number. Lottery numbers are assigned randomly for upperclass students in April, and for first years (and transfers) in June. During the remainder of the year, lottery numbers are assigned from OSCA wait lists on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you have any questions concerning co-op membership, contact the OSCA office (Wilder 406), x58108

SAFE SPACE APPLICANTS

OSCA has two safe spaces available, and whose membership are selected entirely by application.

Old Barrows housing is a safe space for students who feel oppressed due to their gender; Old B primarily serves trans students, with a focus on trans women and trans feminine people. It also serves as a safe space for gender non-conforming people, including non-binary and other trans people. Cis women are allowed into the house as the lowest priority.

Third World dining is a safe space for students of color.

  • Safe space applications are available on the OSCA website and must be submitted NO LATER THAN Sunday 11:59pm March 11, 2018 to be considered for the Upperclass Lottery.

UPPERCLASS CO-OP LOTTERY REGISTRATION

  • To be entered into the Upperclass Co-op Lottery you must register with your co-op preferences, using the link at the bottom of this page, NO LATER THAN April 3, 2018. Applicants will be assigned a random lottery number.

APPLYING AS A CONSECUTIVE PAIR

Two people may apply for co-op membership as a pair; they will receive consecutive lottery numbers, which increases the chances of both persons getting into the same co-op. (Note that consecutive pairs must have the same co-op preferences, in the same priority.) People applying as a consecutive pair need not be of the same gender, and in the case of room and board options, they are not expected to be roommates; pairs are not required to accept any joint options.

More than two people may not apply as a consecutive pair. Consecutive pair cards are available at the OSCA office.

  • Consecutive pair cards must be returned to the OSCA office NO LATER THAN Sunday 11:59pm April 1, 2018.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATION HOUSING

Students with approved Oberlin College special accommodation for a single room may request a single in OSCA if they are accepted into a housing & dining co-op. Receiving an accommodation from Oberlin College does not guarantee a single within OSCA.

  • Students requesting a single must submit a single room special accommodation confirmation letter from the Oberlin College Director of the Office of Disability Resources with OSCA NO LATER THAN Monday 4:00pm April 2, 2018.

LOTTERY NOTIFICATION

  • The co-op lottery will be held April 5, 2018.
  • If you are assigned to a co-op at the April 5th lottery, you will be notified via e-mail by April 6th, 4:00pm.

SECURE YOUR FALL ASSIGNMENT

  • You must go to the Wilder Hall lobby and sign an OSCA membership contract and pay a $75 deposit on Sunday April 8, NOON-10:00pm (check or money order only - NO CASH!) to hold your Fall assignment.
  • This mandatory deposit will be deducted from your Fall 2018 bill. No early or late deposit checks will be accepted!
  • If you fail to pay this deposit on April 8th, you will lose your Fall co-op assignment. No exceptions.
  • The deposit is non-refundable after August 1st.

CHANGING YOUR MIND

If you accept a space in a co-op and decide not to return to your co-op assignment, you must notify the OSCA membership secretary as soon as you can.

  • No deposit refunds will be given unless you request in writing by August 1st.

GETTING INTO OSCA AFTER THE LOTTERY

If you entered the upperclass lottery but either did not get into a co-op, or did not get into your 1st choice co-op, and you still wish to become a member of OSCA you must register for the Fall 2018 Wait List at the OSCA web site (http://oberlin.edu/osca).

  • You can retain your lottery number assigned during the upperclass lottery by registering for the Fall 2018 Wait List after 4:00pm April 6 but NO LATER THAN 11:59pm April 8.

ON LEAVE FOR FALL?

There is an extended deadline for students away from Oberlin for Fall 2018. The $75 deposit is NOT required if you will be on leave Fall 2018 since OSCA cannot guarantee you a co-op space for Spring 2019.

  • If you plan to be away for Fall 2018 and want to be a member of OSCA in Spring 2019 you should still register for the upperclass lottery so that you are assigned a lottery number.
  • After the upperclass lottery, in order to keep that lottery number, you must go to the OSCA website and register for the Spring 2019 Wait List NO LATER THAN NOON Sunday, May 20.
  • Be sure to write 0000 as your OCMR# on the Spring Wait List list form so that we know you will be away from Oberlin for Fall 2018.
